Next Inmagic Melbourne User Group meeting at Jewish Holocaust Centre – 24 November 2016

The next meeting of the Inmagic Museum User Group to be held at the Jewish Holocaust Centre on 24 November 2016.  A long time user of DB/TextWorks to record and manage its collections, the Centre has recently started using Presto for DB/TextWorks. These collection include: museum collection, art collection, video testimonies and newspaper clippings in addition to textbases of geographic and other information. As well as hearing about the Centre, its collections and its experiences with Presto for DB/TextWorks, there will also be an opportunity to look around the museum.

Maxus clients celebrating History Week

History Week  is a busy time in Victoria for the museum and historical societies,  This event organised by the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, aims to provide opportunities to “discover the wonders of Victoria’s past” during the week 16 to 23 October.  The Event Calendar of “fascinating walking tours and engaging discussions, to exhibitions and history in the making events” includes events hosted by Maxus clients.

Report of Inmagic Museum users group meeting at RACV Heritage – 20 April 2016

Helen Stitt, Heritage Collection Curator at the RACV Heritage Centre in Noble Park, was a wonderful host to about 20 Inmagic users for the Inmagic Museum Users Group on 20 April.  The RACV has been using DB/TextWorks for many years to record and manage its collection.

The diversity of the RACV Heritage Collection, incorporating the records of RACV’s business operations and archive relating to the early history of motoring in Victoria, was clearly demonstrated.   The visit commenced with a tour of the heritage vehicle fleet and ‘garagenalia’ collection of the RACV Vehicle Workshop.  The work that Helen has done to increase the visibility and attraction of the collection was evident.  The attendees were treated to a sumptuous afternoon tea including scones with jam and cream before a presentation and display of a selection of items from the archives and photographic collection.

VALA 2016 – A Perspective and Highlights

The Australian library community recently had the opportunity to gather for the VALA Conference and Exhibition (9-11 Feb) in Melbourne.  Pam Millist from Maxus attended one day of the conference and exhibition.
Together with reviewing the available papers, webinars and the very active twitter stream (#vala16), there seemed to be a number of strong themes that emerged of particular interest to special librarians.

Information-packed Inmagic Museum User Group meeting at PMI

A well attended Inmagic Museum User Group meeting was held at the new premises of the Prahran Mechanics Institute on 15 July.  As well as the Prahran Mechanics Institute, the building is the home of the Cinema & Theatre Historical Society of Australia (CATHS) and the Australian Railway Historical Society (Vic.).

After the opportunity for some networking amongst the approximately 30 or more attendees, the group was treated to a jam-packed program from a range of speakers.

  • Judith Dwyer, Secretary of the Mechanics’ Institutes of Victoria opened proceedings. The Mechanics’ Institutes Resource Centre (MIRC) collection includes photographs, building plans, correspondence, and digital files of primary documents such as minutes, correspondence and annual and financial reports. The “Big Mech” database of entries for over 1,000 mechanics’ institutes in Victoria is now searchable on DB/TextWorks.
  • Don Barker from the Australian Railway Historical Society (Vic.).spoke about their experience moving from a warehouse to the new premises ….? The Australian Railway Historical Society’s collection comprises books, Australian railway journals and a selection of US and UK journals. It is still to be fully catalogued.
  • Mike Trickett from Cinema & Theatre Historical Society of Australia (CATHS) discussed and demonstrated their database of past and present cinema and theatre venues in Australia that is available online as well as databases of personalities who worked in the industry, and architects who designed the cinemas.
  • Pam Millist from Maxus presented on some of the exciting developments in the latest verions (v15) of DB/TextWorks including new Rich Text field type, email enhancements, etc.
  • Jodie Boyd from RHSV discussed developments at RHSV and services for local historical societies including the revamp of the Victorian Local History Database.

Inmagic Melbourne User Group meeting at ACER – 21 April 2015

The first meeting for the year of the Melbourne Inmagic User Group will be held at The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) on Tuesday 21 April 2015. The Cunningham Library provides an information service for ACER staff, Library members & ACER Institute students, as well as producing a number of databases such as the Australian Education Index / A+ Education, The Australasian Education Directory, BOLDE, IDP Database of Research in International Education, Learning Ground, EdResearch Online & The Education Research Theses database.
